Woven products are made through using the looms with different kinds of threads. The participants (ages 14 and above) learn and then utilizes their technical weaving skills and color theory to make various products such as cushions, rugs, bags and table runners.
This program started in collaboration with Rangoonwala Community Centre for individuals with Down syndrome ages 12 years and above. They learn various techniques to create simple yet elegant jewelry.
In the weekly sewing and stitching classes, participants learn to stitch and sew, and use these skills to make handicrafts. The participants also learn color theory and different types of stitches to make various products such as felt key-chains and stuffed toys. These handicrafts are sold by the Lehr by KDSP through various channels, and a 100% proceeds from the sales of the products are returned to the participants in order to foster a sense of achievement and financial independence.
The program caters to individuals with Down syndrome and the main outcomes of this program for these individuals are enhanced fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, enhanced creative and imaginative skills, ability to use clay and to mold it into objects/shapes to express themselves, increased ability to follow instructions and create a final object till completion, financial independence and sense of achievement and improved social interaction and self-confidence.
Painting and Drawing workshops are conducted online and in-person (alternating between both) every week with the aim to teach sketching along with painting techniques to support individuals with Down syndrome ages 8 and above in reconnecting to themselves, to find relaxation & inner happiness. Students also learn step by step guided drawing with different art mediums.
Block and screen printing module has been initiated where participants learn color theory, usage and techniques of blocks and screens, and implementation of designs on the fabric/paper to create final products. The aim of this program apart of physical and cognitive development is for the participants to learn a skill and utilize it to financially empower themselves.
KDSP started a Candle Making course with Rangoonwala Community Centre. The classes are held weekly with goals to teach individuals with down syndrome ages 12 and above step-by-step process for creating candles.
Through the weekly Paper Crafts classes, the participants aged 12 and above learn various techniques to create different objects using paper and quilling tools, which in turn help individuals with Down syndrome with developing fine motor skills, improving hand-eye coordination, promoting innovation and creativity, enhancing decision-making skills and using the skill to become financially independent.
The computer skills program is for individuals with Down syndrome aged 12+. The main goal is for the individuals to learn how to operate computer and to bring its usage in their daily life. Since computers mostly incorporate visual elements, there are greater chances for a better learning. There is also a reduced need for the kinds of precision with fine motor skills that usually writing and drawing require. The curriculum comprises of various different modules ranging from computer fundamentals, to practicing mouse/keyboard, Microsoft office, working on simple art software, internet surfing and logical/educational games.
KDSP has introduced Photography classes as part of the Education for Life Program. It provides individuals with Down syndrome the opportunity to learn about camera angles, lighting and editing. The class incorporates field trips to allow students to photograph new spaces and landscapes.
The cooking program helps individuals with Down syndrome ages 14 and above to help them learn basic culinary skills to make delicious food items and follow their passion to learn proper culinary arts. The curriculum has been redefined with the newer research. With the new training kitchen, students will be trained with more effectively.
